Carney’s Community takes Lloyd’s Banking Group top community fund award 6 January 2014

In July 2013 local charity, Carney’s Community, applied to the Lloyds Community Fund to support the work they are doing with disadvantaged young people in the boroughs of Wandsworth and Lambeth.

Carneys Community

Carney’s Community aims to reduce offending, re-offending and anti-social behaviour, whilst improving social mobility and community cohesion. They achieve this by engaging a range of young people, in positive and constructive activities, whilst offering intensive, one to one mentoring. These young people are from a variety of backgrounds, with a focus on the disadvantaged and excluded. They believe that by empowering young people through mentoring, participation, focusing on their strengths and learning from each other, they can improve not only their opportunities, but also those of their local communities. Carney’s Community applied for funding to help support the boxing fitness sessions they run with their young people and also to support them into employment, through one-to-one work and funding training qualifications such as the Boxing tutor Award and Junior Box Leader Award. They are hoping to have more people available to run taster boxing fitness sessions, on both a voluntary and paid basis. A positive by-product of this is Carney’s Community creates more of an interest in boxing and can link those that want to take it further into local Amateur Boxing Clubs such as Fitzroy Lodge ABC and Earlsfield ABC.

Carney’s application was accepted by Lloyd's Banking Group and then put out to the local community who voted for a number of good causes. The result being that Carney's Community successfully won 28.98% of all the votes in Lambeth, which led to the top award of £3,000.
