The Facility 13 March 2013

Designing buildings, spaces and places that are as innovative as they are financially, environmentally and socially responsible.

The Facility Architects and ConsultantsThe Facility is a multi-award-winning architecture and sustainability consultancy based in London, offering strategic advice, creative architecture, innovative engineering and imaginative funding solutions to local authorities, housing providers, communities and businesses.

The Facility has an original and creative approach of doing business and helping its customers to find funding solutions with a selection of sustainable strategies and a personalised service.

An area of particular expertise is retrofitting design solutions and technologies to existing building stock and reusing existing buildings. The Facility is a low carbon technical advisor to the BRE and RIBA and regularly speaks at conferences around the globe.

Among its core values are:

  • Sustainability – it’s not an add on, and The Facility embrace triple bottom line on which sustainable projects must be economically, socially and environmentally achievable.
  • Innovation – The Facility likes to ride innovation waves and constantly interrogate the status quo, even developing its own technologies.
  • Unrivalled added value – it genuinely cares about the projects it delivers, and makes every effort for them to be as successful as possible.
  • Experts in funding – The Facility has secured millions of pounds of funding for its clients, often bringing in funding at the start of projects.
Really Smart House

ReallySmartHouse

The Facility is retrofitting 40 hard-to-treat homes for Southend Borough Council as part of a European funded retrofit programme. The homes are an eclectic mix of construction methods, with inefficient heating systems exacerbating tenants suffering fuel poverty.

The innovative materials, products and technologies used will be based on their concept of the ReallySmartHouse, which combines home automation with technologies that affect user behaviour and reduce energy waste.

Proposed improvements include: smart metering, hydrogen fuel cells, thermodynamic panels Solar PV, air source heat pumps, phase change materials and advanced insulation. These interventions will reduce energy bills for tenants, making the properties warmer and more comfortable to live in while greatly increasing the lifespan of the buildings for the local authority, making them much more sustainable.

This year The Modern Built Environment has joined forces with Marks & Spencer and the Facility Architects to deliver the Innovation Zone at EcoBuild 2013. The winning innovation, geared towards the domestic market, will be used in the ReallySmartHouse project. The winner – Loxone, is the latest technology to make a property work for its resident intelligently, efficiently and above all, automatically. It’s about time our homes caught up with everything else and got smart. And that’s where they will come in – Truly Smart Homes!
