Are you part of Gas Safety Week? 28 August 2013
Kevin the gas man

Gas Safety Week is an annual safety week to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. The third annual Gas Safety Week takes place on 16th – 22nd September 2013.

Did you know?

Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.

A few facts about Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is responsible for the largest number of fatal poisonings in Britain today.

GCI safety van

Approx. 50 deaths and 4000 sub lethal poisoning reported in Britain last year due to CO (figures are almost certainly higher as CO very hard to detect).

CO can travel from house to house; your house may be safe but is next doors or the flat below?

The elderly and infants are more vulnerable to CO poisoning.

CO alarms are as important as smoke alarms

Gas Safety Week

Although there is awareness that gas appliances need to be safety checked annually, 43% of Britons don’t do it, and 10% have gas appliances which have never been checked (Gas Safety Week Research 2011).

Landlords & Homeowners

  • Do you have a Carbon Monoxide alarm in your property?
  • Do you have more than one Carbon Monoxide alarm in your property?
  • Is your Carbon Monoxide alarm in the right location?
  • What type of Carbon Monoxide alarm/s do you have?
  • Does your Carbon Monoxide alarm ever really get checked properly (and not just with the reset button)?

As the general public become more aware to the dangers of CO we at GCI Safegas Ltd feel the need to have a CO alarm/s will rise proportionally, probably the same rate as smoke alarms have over the last 2 decades and we will only install CO alarms that comply to BS EN 50291.
