Streetscape seeks support in fixing skills shortage in horticulture 17 June 2013
Streetscape

UK horticulture is suffering from a skills shortage, according to a report by the iRHS. Streetscape is a social enterprise, based in South London that is addressing this shortage by providing rigorous apprenticeships in landscape gardening to long-term unemployed 18 - 25 year olds.

Streetscape is looking to hear from employers who can provide employment opportunities and work experience to their apprentices and who can help Streetscape further tailor their apprenticeships to the needs of future employers.

Alan Hay and David Saville will be graduating from Streetscape in July with Level 2 Diplomas in Work-based Horticulture. Under the expert guidance of one of our experienced landscapers, they have worked on residential, commercial and community-based projects including the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Product of the Year stand 2013 with Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer. David said:

“Being a Streetscape apprentice has given me new skills and direction. Now I know I want to be a landscape gardener.”

Guy Watts, Co-Founder of Streetscape, said:

“Streetscape is seeking support from those in the horticultural industry. We intend to create a network of employers who will consider trialling and/or employing apprentices that have completed our training programme and provide work experience to our current apprentices. We are passionate about training to the highest standards and the needs of the industry, so we want to hear from employers to further understand their requirements.”

Streetscape have already received support from those in the industry, including Richard McKenna, Managing Director of Provender Nurseries who says:

“The people who work for Streetscape are a pleasure to have on site as they work in a clean, tidy, polite and professional manor at all times. Provender Nurseries are happy to support such a worthwhile charitable cause which brings new talent into the world of horticulture.”
