Ever thought of taking on an apprentice – why not? 13 March 2013

What’s in it for you and your business?
You may qualify for a £1,500 grant

Wandsworth WISE (working & investing in skills & education)

We have helped recruit apprentices in a range of businesses and have a proven track-record of apprentices within our own council and in the private sector. Wandsworth WISE is dedicated to helping your business hire an apprentice from the beginning to the end of the process.

Apprentices are typically 16-24 years old eager to learn and work towards a national vocational qualification alongside their daily duties. We specialise in six areas: business administration, customer service, IT, childcare, teaching and domiciliary care. We offer ongoing support throughout the apprenticeship with a dedicated member of the team who will visit on a monthly basis.

We offer a free recruitment service including a selection process, advertising, an initial assessment providing you with a number of applicants to interview. The National Apprenticeship Scheme is currently offering a grant of £1,500 to businesses employing less than 1,000 employees and who haven’t taken on an apprentice in the last 12 months. The typical weekly wage is £140 -£200 and you would need to provide them with a Contract of Employment.

Here are two examples…..

Here’s Chelsey who completed her Business Administration Apprenticeship, with Wandsworth Council this year.

Wandsworth WISE

‘Throughout my apprenticeship experience I have learned a number of skills that not only can I use within the workplace, but also in day-to-day life. It was a challenge as well as enjoyable, and I feel it has brought out the best in me and the right influences have helped me to pursue a career path which I am interested in. Now there’s no turning back and only more doors will open from here’.

And from a business…..

Winckworth Sherwood, a busy law firm based in the heart of London Bridge, has been working closely with Wandsworth WISE to successfully take on 3 young apprentices.

Karen Cooksley, Partner and Head of Planning Law at Winckworth Sherwood ‘We are proud to be giving our three recruits an avenue into work and to play a part in boosting youth employment. The success of Steve Andrade in his role for my team has made me evangelical about asking other businesses with whom we deal to consider taking an apprentice’.

Steve Andrade is studying Level 3 Business Administration and is working within the firm’s Planning team. Georgina Koranchie is working in the Education team, and studying for her Level 2 Business Admin. The most recent apprentice is Jake Gammell-Lawrence who is part of the IT team whilst studying for his IT apprenticeship.
