Local businesses already making the connections

The redevelopment of the Shell Centre is a major driving force behind the launch of the South London Procurement Network.

The site’s joint venture developers, Canary Wharf Group and Qatari Diar, have already committed to contracts worth over £1m with firms in the local area.

The Network will work with small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Borough of Lambeth and also more widely across south London to help them access and bid for contracts from major businesses and projects based in the area.

Here are some examples of local companies who are already making the connection with major firms in the local area, and with the Shell Centre developers and the South London Procurement Network. All will be founder members of the Network.

“Since engaging with SLPN services many moons ago in October 2014, 3S Partnerships Ltd have grown year on year and I am in no doubt that our engagement of their invaluable services has assisted our growth both economically and intellectually.

The services we have used to date include:

  • Attending several workshops which are free to registered suppliers
  • Attending buyer and networking events also for free
  • One to one consultation again for free

As a relatively new company, when we registered with SLPN, 3S Partnerships needed business knowledge and understanding to help implement our ideas and to differentiate ourselves from competitors. Going into business for the first time can be daunting and making use of SLPN’s services really helped us to navigate the economic terrain and build market resilience. We embarked on an 18-month strategy to increase our business acumen, networking capabilities and service offering. As a consequence of those 18 months, we were able to identify our target market, rebrand and create a compelling offering which has helped us to retain clients, win new business and consolidate those relationships.

One of the unexpected but welcome outcomes from using is that we have been able to establish a direct and on-going supplier relationship with SLPN for our security services along with our conflict management and leadership workshops as part of their annual programme. It has been an absolute pleasure liaising and discussing strategy with SLPN and I cannot thank them enough for their support and assistance throughout the time I’ve known them.”

Beaver Pest Control LLP have been attending networking events and training sessions for over five years now. We have found SLPN to be excellent in supporting us as a business, introducing us to key contacts and helping us understand what the larger ‘Blue Chip’ clients want from their potential suppliers.

Building relationships with larger clients is not an easy process, and even getting in front of them to explain your business can be an almighty challenge. But this is where the SLPN team can really help and assure that you get the most out of the meeting.

Often after meet the buyer events it remains difficult to keep communication going with the person that you met. Again this is where SLPN can help in giving the contractor a nudge now and again if you are not gaining a response. Nevertheless, the process is often slow as the end user may not have a need for your services at that time. The trick is to impress them at the first meeting and then try to stay in touch, be in their psyche when they are finally looking for the service that you offer. Beware though that this can be a long process running into months and years.

Beaver Pest Control nevertheless, with SLPN’s help, have managed to attain work over the years with Battersea Power Station, the Southbank Place development and on top of this, further work and contacts with second tier suppliers. Our Partnership with SLPN over the years has been excellent, on top of their personal help and advice. I highly recommend their networking and workshop events.”

“Over the years we have attended networking events organised by South London Procurement Network. We have always found them to be well organised and the calibre of buyers/business contacts we have made has been very positive for our company and helped us to gain new business.

As a result of attending the networking sessions from SLPN we have established long standing working relationships with buyers in companies such as Hotchkiss, O’Hare & McGovern Ltd and Erith to name but a few. We have provided and continue to provide them with promotional merchandise and corporate clothing to support their ongoing marketing campaigns.

SLPN recently introduced us to colleagues at Canary Wharf Contractors and Canary Wharf Group. After meeting and discussing the marketing campaigns, we secured an order to provide branded Contigo Bottles, bags and T Shirts. We hope that our relationship with Canary Wharf Group will be a long and fruitful one like the many others we have made through SLPN.

As a solely woman owned business located in South London we pride ourselves in also being an Ethnic Minority Business (EMB). Our ethos is that we believe diversity and inclusion start from the top and this is clearly shown in the team of people at BX Merchandise. Through this it is clear that our passion is to promote a positive message and encourage our clients and staff to achieve their full potential.”

GSL Cleaning Services was an independent, family run cleaning company located on the south side of the river in London, providing efficient and reliable cleaning/support services to commercial, construction, domestic sectors, as well as providing security services to the people and businesses of London and surrounding areas.

They joined SLPN in January 2013 as a registered supplier with three members of staff and a turnover of £5,000. It started as an LLP and soon progressed to LTD in 2014. Since that time, SLPN has helped GSL win cleaning contracts worth over £290,000 with Lambeth Council, Network Rail and a number of property companies in the Nine Elms area. As a result, GSL now has an annual turnover of around £260,000, has created 20 new jobs, and expanded its range of services.

Marlon Mendoza, Director of GSL Cleaning, says: “The South London Procurement Network has been invaluable in helping us grow our business. From buyer networking events, to assistance with completing contracts, they’re an ideal business partner.”

Mediworld, founded in 1973, began life as a family-run high street shop in Streatham. 43 years later, they are still a family-run business based in Streatham, but is now a leading international company in the supply of medical and scientific equipment with a global reach across 5 continents and over 40 countries.

They joined SLPN in May 2015 as a registered supplier and not so long after, Naveed Khan, a Director at Mediworld, utilised one of our free services by attending a workshop and meeting Richard Hoque, one of our experienced trainers in Digital Marketing.

“We found the seminar SLPN presented by Richard back in September 2015 organised,  very informative and were so impressed that we approached him to work with us. We embarked upon a program intended to introduce us to the world of Google Adwords & marketing and along the way, Richard taught us how to navigate our way around the field and manage/troubleshoot the system for ourselves. He was incredibly professional, knowledgeable and efficient and I, personally, found him very easy to work with.”

“I would say that our volume of online sales have tripled since we started working with Richard and that the increase in revenue has quadrupled in the same time period. Richard also set us up so that we could continue working even after his 6-month contract had ended. This is sometimes not always the case when a consultant or technical adviser works with you. We have enjoyed the same exponential level of growth in the months after since his contract ended.”
